Personal budget app: plan each category for the month, track spending, and get a warning when one goes over. An AI Putty example you can copy and change.

Personal budget app: monthly plan, spending, warnings

A personal budget app for anyone who plans a monthly amount per category and wants to see, at a glance, where the money went and what's over. It's a live example built with AI Putty from one sentence: "Track my monthly budget: categories, what I planned and what I spent, and warn me when a category goes over." You can import it into your own project and change it by talking to your AI.

Totals and warnings

  • Totals at the top add up the month: Planned, Spent, Left (or Over by, in red) and Over budget, how many categories are over, as N of M.
  • Warnings: each category that has spent more than its plan shows next, in a red box, with how much it's over by and how much of its plan it has used.

Categories

One bar per category, over-budget ones first, then fullest first. Each shows what's spent of what's planned, what's left (or over) and the percent used. Green is on track, yellow is close (90% or more of the plan), red is OVER.

Which month: the heading names the month shown. It's this month; if nothing is spent yet this month, it's the latest month that has spending.

Add a spend and recent spending

  • Add a spend (members): the Date (today to start), the Category, the Amount and a short Note, then Add. The bars and totals update.
  • Recent spending: your latest ten spends, newest first, with the date, category, note and amount. Of plan is how much of the category's monthly plan that one spend used.

Examples

"Am I over budget this month?" Look at the red boxes under the totals. In the sample month (October 2026), Groceries is over by $31.25 and Eating out by $24.50, so Over budget reads 2 of 5.

"How much do I have left overall?" Read Left in the totals. In the samples, $2,811.75 is spent of $2,870 planned, leaving $58.25.

"Was that sushi dinner a big part of the eating-out plan?" Find it in Recent spending and read Of plan. In the samples, $128 of a $200 plan is 64%.

Make it yours

Ask your AI to import it (see Budget): "import the budget app from examples". Your project gets the model, the app, this help and the sample month, and from then on it's yours to change. Then, say:

  • "Add a category for the kids, $300 a month"
  • "Email me the moment a category goes over"
  • "Show me last month next to this one"
  • "Plan $700 for groceries in December"

How it's built

Two classes: a category (name, icon, monthly plan) and a spend (a dated amount in one category, with a note). The model computes how much of the plan each spend uses, and the yearly plan. A month's spent per category is a sum over many spends, so the page adds it up and marks a category close or over. Amounts are shown in CAD. See BudgetDesign for the layout and Budget for all the parts.
